Chapter 40

New Year’s Resolutions are not a new invention. They have been around since about 4,000 BC with the first recorded versions of them coming from the Babylonians. This is the same Empire that brought us the Hanging Gardens, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but they also threw Daniel in the Lion’s Den.

New Year’s Resolutions rank somewhere between the Hanging Gardens and throwing someone to hungry lions. They could turn out wonderfully, or your resolutions could be disastrous, failing before they even get started.
I am very low-key with my resolutions. I don’t make many, but when I do, I generally keep them. My resolutions are to read through the Bible in one year, as I have done several times, and read a book a week. I do both through listening to audiobooks. It’s not only fun to discover new audiobooks, but the voices that narrate them.

Of course, there are the less tangible resolutions such as to be more giving and generous to those in our sphere of influence. There are many ways to achieve this resolution, but one of the best is giving to charitable organizations like Arin’s Good Girl Dog Treats. This wonderful non-profit company has a goal of raising 25,000 dollars in 2025 to hire five new bakers. Your donation will provide opportunities for more individuals with disabilities to join our team, gain valuable skills, and build their careers.

Sometimes I feel like I don’t do enough to support Arin’s Good Girl Dog Treats. Everybody else is working diligently to get tasty treats to your furry best friends as quickly as possible while I simply sit behind my desk and recount my adventures with Gabe. It doesn’t seem to carry as much weight by comparison. Donating will give me the chance to do a little more. Having a job writing for a newspaper and other outlets for the past 20 years has given me a sense of fulfillment that is hard to put into words. If I can play a small part in giving another disabled person that same sense of fulfillment, it is well worth it. If you would like to donate here is the link: Help Us Expand Our Mission.

I plan on giving my donation in honor of my Chessie Gabe, the best boy in the whole world. When he came to live on our farm just over three years ago, I never could have imagined how Gabe would enrich the lives of not only myself but also impact members of my family as well. The adventures and experiences Gabe and I have had together are priceless and irreplaceable.

If Gabe is the best boy in the world., what are his New Year’s Resolutions? I mean, how do you improve on perfection? Ok, so I know Gabe isn’t perfect, but love covers a multitude of sins. Even though he is not perfect, I hope he does not change in 2025. I want my 75-pound Tasmanian Devil to stay the same. When he gets muddy footprints on the bed or chews up the singing animal that you got for Christmas, those are the things that keep life interesting,

Knowing Gabe, we will certainly have lots of interesting adventures in 2025 and I can’t wait to share them with all of you.

Happy New Year!!
Love,
Jacob & Gabe
